1993 Porsche Boxster Concept

In January 1993, Porsche announced its new Boxster study under the heading “Porsche unveils pioneering sports car concept”. The first production Boxster (Type 986) came onto the market just three years later.
In 1996, Porsche launched the production version of the Boxster Type 986. This thoroughbred two-seater, powered by a water-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine delivering 204 hp, was designed and developed by Porsche engineers in a record three and a half years. Completely unrivalled, the innovative roof concept enabled the electric hood to open and close in just 12 seconds. In the same year, the Boxster was awarded first prize by the International Magnesium Agency in Japan for its pioneering use of magnesium die-cast parts on its hood mechanism.
The result was the low centre of gravity typical of a sports car with a drag coefficient of just 0.31. The Boxster was also incredibly agile and dynamic, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph). In addition, the car was fitted with a modern exhaust system featuring two metal catalytic converters for controlling emissions.

As with the 550 Spyder and the RS 60 from the 1950s, the car’s
exterior was characterised by dramatic, sweeping proportions. The
mid-engined design led to a number of stipulations that shaped the
appearance of the concept car. These include a relatively long wheelbase
for a vehicle of such dimensions and a cockpit that was positioned
really far forward. While the overhang at the rear was extremely short,
the front section with its integrated radiator stretched out
significantly over the front axle. The difference in overhang at the
front and rear helped to create the exciting visual appeal for which the
Boxster has become renowned. Another typical Porsche feature was the
instrument cluster: five classic round instruments in analogue
