1984 Renault R5 Turbo II
Originally homologated for FIA World Rallye, the Renault R5 Turbo was
a very competitive car and much sought after in Europe. However, the
U.S. Department of Transportation would not officially allow it to be
distributed among the existing Renault franchise dealerships in the
United States.
The motor came in three stages or variants. They were all 1.4 litre 4 cylinder turbo charged motors mounted in the middle of the vehicle for optimal weight distribution. This particular example is a Stage II producing approximately 220 bhp. These vehicles were composed of fiberglass fenders and hood, steel doors, and sometimes an aluminum roof. Total weight is just over 2,100 lbs. With its lightweight, big horsepower, and short wheelbase, it was a formidable competitor on the World Rallye scene. In fact, in 1984, it was the overall World Rallye Champion.
This R5 has less than 40,000 original miles and wears its original Nacre Pearl White paint. The previous owner of this vehicle is one of the head of design for General Motors.
It has some tasteful upgrades which include Gotti Wheels with fairly new A008 Yokohama tires, Recaro Pole Position seats and Stage II engine modifications.

A small company in Southern California called Sun International
started doing the D.O.T. process for a few of these rare Rallye cars and
is believed to have processed approximately 100 cars for the U.S. These
cars were immediately popular among the track enthusiasts and
unfortunately, most of them have not survived. There are only a handful
of these legal U.S. versions left. The motor came in three stages or variants.
