Last March, Avera Motors CEO R.J. Scaringe announced the ultra-efficient automotive company would be changing its name to Rivian Automotive.

“We selected a powerful, timeless name that illustrates who we are as a company, how we blend with the natural environment and what we seek to do within the industry,” says Scaringe, an alumnus of MIT’s Sloan Automotive Laboratory. “The team developed the name internally and I am quite pleased with the energy and creativity that went into the process – it is a great example of our strong company culture.”
The origin of the name pays homage in part to the Indian River Lagoon considered by the Environmental Protection Agency as an “estuary of national significance” and one of the most biologically diverse estuarine systems in the continental United States. The name represents a blend of the words Indian and River – taking the first three letters of River and the last three of Indian. The Indian River flows through the length of Brevard County, Florida, where the company is currently headquartered.
“We considered the parallels between the waterway and our company. The continuous motion and the naturally dynamic system of the Indian River Lagoon symbolize the company’s flexibility and energy,” says Scaringe. “A river has the ability to reshape its landscape. Rivian Automotive is a company of vibrant energy working to reshape vehicle design, manufacturing, and distribution.”
The company says the name change has had little impact on the plan to release its first model, a coupe, for commercial sale in early 2013, with additional models following in 2014. Currently, the company is hiring engineers with automotive-related experience.
In November 2010, a large automotive company filed suit against the Florida-based company in Florida Middle District Court claiming that the corporate name Avera Motors was infringing on one of their car brand names. At that time, Scaringe stated the company would change its name to avoid costly legal fees at such an important stage in the company’s development.
Incorporated in 2009, Rivian Automotive, formerly Avera Motors, is an innovative automotive company currently based in Brevard County, Florida. The company is focused on the development and US manufacturing of affordable, ultra-efficient green performance vehicles. Rivian is a spin-off from the 25 year-old Florida-based developer and manufacturer of thermal control and energy conversion products, Mainstream Engineering.
