Late in the 1970 the stylists completed a full-scale plaster model of Project X, Leiding approved the building of a running car for display at a German Trade Show at march 1971.
There it attracted so much attention, that it was tooled for production with partial help of Karmann.
The SP was probably the first car that was built using other Volkswagen components to keep the costs low. Prof. Leiding was arguably the first employing a platform strategy.
For instance the front-axle is quite similar to the beetle, the chassis is a bit modified type 3 chassis. Altogether 11,123 units were built from the SP1 and SP2.
After Prof. Leiding left Brazil he took office as CEO Volkswagen worldwide and in 1974 VW started to produce the Golf.
Prof. Leiding died in early September this year.
